The surround frames the opening or inset. Surrounds are usually marble, wood or cast iron. The ground floor of any sizeable Victorian house would have a marble surround with a 60”/66” shelf, commonly made of Carrara Italian marble. The typical style of the day was a ‘Corbel’ surround with two heavy scrolls as brackets, or corbels set on either leg under the shelf at either end.
